How to price your first membership tier

Start lower than you think, give one clear reason to join, and raise the price for new members once it fills up.

Nadia Park

Most creators set their first price by looking at what other people charge. That’s a fine start, but the number matters less than what people get for it.

Pick one reason to join

A tier with one obvious benefit sells better than a tier with seven small ones. ‘The full essay every Sunday’ is easier to say yes to than a list of perks.

Start at $5 to $8 a month

Across creators on Fieldpass, first tiers between $5 and $8 convert best. You can always add a higher tier later for people who want more.

Raise prices for new members only

When you raise a price, keep existing members on the old one. It costs you little and it’s the kind of thing people remember.
